Spaniard TT‘s to Victory

Severe financial problems pledged the 1966 edition of the Vuelta a Espana. Jose-Antonio Elola Olaso, the person in charge of the Physical Education and Sports in Spain, realizing the value of the Grand National Tour and came to the rescue just days before the race was to be cancelled. The late funding of the prizes did have a negative effect on the start list. Former champions Rudi Altig, Jacques Anquetil, Raymond Poulidor and Rik Van Looy did not participate.

Race Summary:

Stage 7: 105 km from Calatayud to Zaragoza, Ferry’s Ramon Saez attacked and formed a 12-rider breakaway group, eight from the powerful KAS team. At the finish in Zaragoza the group arrived well ahead of schedule. Dutchman Cees Haast won the stage with a very attentive race leader close behind.

SPECIAL NOTE: after stage 7 a bacterial infection, thought to be anthrax at the time, hit the peloton. Several pre-race favorites rode slowly after being affected by the infection. They slowly abandoned the race over the next four stages.

Stage 13: Fagor team director Pedro Machain formulated a plan to launch Luis Otano, Domingo Perurena, and Mariano Diaz into an early breakaway. On the Collar D'arichu-legui Valentin Uriona, the race leader, and his KAS team began to struggle. KAS’ effort fell short, and race leader lost 1’58” to stage winner Cees Haast. The Dutchman took the Amarillo Jersey.

Stage 15a: from Vitoria to Haro, this year's winner was determined in the first half of the stage. The 61 km mountain Individual Time Trial provided the only excitement of the race. Dutchman Cees Haast held the race lead, but doubting Dutch fans asked: 'could he perform on the mountainous time trial'?

Carlos Echeverria held the fastest intermediate time at the time check at 33 km (the summit of the Alto de Herrera). He was 16” ahead of teammate Francisco Gabica and 1'57” ahead of race leader Haast. Inspired by a 1’41” time gain at the summit Gabica plunged off the mountain, taking all the risks necessary to win the stage. His winning time was more than 3 minutes faster than Haast and the Amarillo Jersey passed to Gabica.

Stage 18: The powerful KAS team escorted Francisco Gabica through the final four stages and into the finish in Bilbao without a problem. Gabica's victory marked the highlight of the Spaniard's grand career. The powerful KAS team took all three podium positions.
